Are Chinese Mothers Superior?

Why Chinese Mothers are Superior
Sport in Education
Wall Street Journal

This article compares the way that Chinese mothers raise their children to the way that "Western" mothers raise their children. Chinese children are known to be "math wizzes and music prodigies." Chinese families are known to be more strict and less leniant about raising their children. The author admits that the stereotype does not include all Chinese or Western parents but it does include most.

Chinese mothers are strict when it comes to playing instruments. They make their children practice for two to three hours a day, compared to the thirty minutes to an hour or "Western" mothers.

Statistics show that "Western" mothers believe that learning should be portrayed as fun and not stressed upon their children. Chinese mothers believe that "academic achievement reflects successful parenting." Studies also show that Western kids are more likely to participate in sports rather than study like the Chinese children.

Strict parenting from the "get-go" results in a higher level of respect from the children. Chinese parents are known to be able to get away with more than Western parents are likely to be able to get away with. When Western parents are strict, the children treat them with disrespect and do not take them seriously.

The main difference is the fact that Western parents try to allow their children to make their own decisions and pursue their own goals. Whereas Chinese parents like to map out their children's successful futures.

“The Pitch”

I remember vividly “The Pitch” by George W. Bush. The president threw out the first pitch of the 2001 World Series in New York. The Yankees were playing the Arizona Diamondbacks. This was right after the September 11th attacks on the Twin Towers in NYC. Bush threw a strike right down the middle and this gave the citizens of the United States hope in a time of sorrow and distress. “No matter what keep pitching, no matter what you go to the game, you go to the mound, you find the plate, and you throw, and you become who you are.” I must say that this video gave me the chills. It was an amazing experience and as an avid baseball fan and an US citizen, I would have given anything to have witnessed it.

A similar event took place in Kuwait with President Obama. He was speaking to American troops in Kuwait and decided to take a 3-point shot while talking to them. He made it on the first attempt.

Sarah Palin’s “Alaska” has been victim to criticism ever since it hit the air on TLC. In this particular video clip she is seen hunting and killing a caribou. She clearly states that, in Alaska, hunting is a way of life and a means of providing for her family. Palin has received criticism from groups due to the fact that she is a woman doing what is considered to be “manly”; however, she still stands strong in her stance. The show also allows Palin to be seen as a “normal” American compared to a highly publicized politician.

One cannot forget Ted Kennedy's famous lines when introducing Mark McGuire and Sammy Sosa at the White House. He introduced McGuire as "Mike Mcguire" and Sosa as "Sammy Sooser." This is extremely embarassing.

Courtship of Rivals: Magic and Bird

Courtship of Rivals: Magic and Bird
Sport and Race
HBO Documentary

Erving “Magic” Johnson and Larry Bird were two players that came from totally different backgrounds but both became major stars in the NBA. During their professional careers they were each other’s biggest rivals on and off the court. Magic was an African-American that had dealt with racial tension and obstacles his whole life. Bird was a country born white player from Indiana that just played the game of basketball. Their rivalry began when Magic was at Michigan State and Bird was at Indiana State. These two teams met in the 1979 NCAA National Championship. Magic and the Michigan State Spartans prevailed with a victory over Bird and the Indiana State Sycamores. Both Bird and Johnson were drafted early in the 1979 NBA draft. Their rivalry continued on into the NBA. The rivalry fit right into the racial stereotypes of the time. Magic was an African-American and Bird was a country boy. Magic played the game of basketball with a flashy style and Bird just seemed to get the job done. A lot of controversy arose after their Converse commercial together hit the air in 1986. In 1993 at Bird’s retirement ceremony, Magic is quoted as describing Bird as a “friend forever.”

Straight Outta LA

Straight Outta L.A.

ESPN 30 for 30

This video was part of the ESPN 30 for 30 documentary series. This particular film talked about the Raiders football team. It spoke about how the city of Los Angeles really took hold of the Raiders attitude and how the team represented the city of L.A. The NFL franchise made the move to Los Angeles in 1982 under head coach and general manager Al Davis. The Raiders had a reputation of being a tough and hard-nosed football team. Likewise, the city of Los Angeles has a reputation of being a rough area to live in. Ice Cube narrates this documentary and really speaks from his heart about how much he cared for the Raiders and how much the Raiders meant to his career as a rapper. His rap group was called the NWA (Niggas with Attitude). Other members of the NWA were Snoop Dogg, Eazy E, and Dr. Dre. They always were seen in Raiders gear and really grasped the hard-nosed mentality in their music and lifestyle. Even after the Raiders left Los Angeles in 1994, Ice Cube claims that the city of L.A. will always be tied to the Raiders franchise.

Alive and Kicking Article Review

Alive and Kicking
Sporting Heritage
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1140917/1/index.htm
3/17/11

Alive and Kicking is the story of the Fugees, a soccer team of war refugees. The Fugees are a team out of the state of Georgia. The players are from 24 different war torn countries throughout the world. Each single player has his own story about his family was torn apart because of the war and things that he had witnessed growing up. Even the coach, Luma Mufleh, has her own story about growing up in a rich family but becoming a refugee and her journey to America.
Luma found herself in an apartment complex in Clarkston, Georgia, after taking a wrong turn on her way home from work. She witnessed a handful of kids playing soccer in a parking lot. They were all of foreign nationality and were playing barefoot on the asphalt. This reminded her of where she came from. All of the kids were war refugees that had never been taught anything about soccer, just picked it up while playing. She approached the kids about becoming a team and she would be their coach. She wanted to start an under-10 team and an under-12 team. They gladly accepted her and they began practicing.
The rest of the story is about the challenges Luma and her team had to overcome, including a fight in which African-American boys jumped one of her players. Luma has to overcome her own fears and help the kids in their challenges on and outside of the soccer field, including school. Alive and Kicking is very interesting, informative, and inspirational article.

Dare to Compete: Women in Sports

Dare To Compete
Sports and Gender
3/15/2011

"Dare to Compete: Women in Sports" is a short film produced by HBO. It is about women and the way that they have progressed in the area of sports throughout the years. We were not able to watch the whole film; however, what we did watch was very interesting and informative.

The part that we were able to watch mentioned two women that are well known for their part in sport history. The first is Gertrude Ederle. She was the first woman to swim the English Channel and also the first person to ever swim it freestyle. She broke the men’s record by two hours. Ederle was able to swim the English Channel in 14 hours. The second woman mentioned was Suzanne Lenglen. She was known for being elegant and graceful. Lenglen was a women’s sports superstar in tennis. She is said to have appeared as a ballerina on the court.

We also learned about John R. Tunis. He wrote an article about the first time women were allowed to run the 800M in the Olympic games. The women were worn out after the race and laid down on the ground one at a time. The damage from his article about the 800M women’s race kept women from running more than 100M for the next 32 years.

The last thing that was mentioned was the bicycle. It was believed that the way a bicycle seat was made was bad for a woman’s body in the area of reproduction.

I am interested in watching the rest of this film and learning more about women in sport.

Ode to Southern Football

Ode To Southern Football
Sport and Heritage
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/eticket/story?page=southernfootball
2/1/11

Winter and Spring: In this section the writer talks about all of the traditions of crazy football fans around the south. He says that this is the time when all of the stories are told reliving past memories and telling stories about tailgating. This is the time of the year when the football season has just recently finished, and fans are already itching for it to begin again. There is recruiting going on that just keeps football fans in the mood for the fall to eventually begin. He talks about how all of the SEC schools have their own traditions including: Rocky Top, Toomer’s corner, and “Pig Sooie.” All of the stories are told around the dinner table or even deer camps and tree stands.

Summer: In this section he talks about how the mood starts to heat up thinking that football season is right around the corner. The college towns are empty and restaurants are easier to be seated in. He mentions that fans are like players; they can get too fired up too far in advance. It is hard not to get fired up when hearing about summer practices in the heat and even the SEC media days in Hoover, Alabama. Towards the end of the summer it is obvious that the season is right around the corner.

Summer Turns to Fall: This section is primarily about the SEC media days in Hoover, Alabama, and all of the tension and excitement that they bring to coaches, fans, and reporters alike. The tension of knowing that the football season is here in a few weeks is intense. The coaches are friends during the media days, but the mood will change as soon as they all get on their respective planes to fly home. They are all undefeated at this point and have a huge smile on their face on the plane.

Fall: When fall gets here it is time to “rock and roll.” The writer talks about how school is now in session and football season is finally here. He mentions how he watches practice then makes his way to sit in the empty stadium imagining it full from top to bottom with fans of all ages. He closes his eyes and sees the Vol Navy and little girls saying “Tiger bait.” Football season is finally here and it is game time.

Personal Sports Biography

Sports Participation Background:

  • I was introduced to sports by my father in my living room when I was 2 years old. He bought me a tee, ball, and a plastic bat for Christmas. He set it up for me not expecting me to be able to hit it. I hit it and proceeded to shatter the window in the back of the living room.
  • I never played informal non-competitive sports as a child.
  • Yes I did play formal youth/competitive sports as a child. I played baseball, basketball, and soccer.
  • I have played since i was 3 years old.
  • I have several memorable positive experiences and not very many negative ones. My highest point in my sports history has to be my first college at bat here at Reinhardt University. I hit a solo homerun to right field against Bluefield College in my very first college at bat. My lowest point would have to be the day I found out I had to have Labrum surgery.
  • Now, I play college baseball at RU.
Sports Spectatorship
  • Favorite sports to watch are baseball, football, basketball, and golf
  • I use the internet and the TV to follow sports
  • The National Championship, World Series, Super Bowl, Braves games, UT games, Colts games, and Titans games are all "can't miss" viewing for me

Contemporary Sports Issues
  • Cam Newton's pay for play scandal is very interesting to me right now. I just want the truth to come out and for everything to be set straight.
  • Bruce Pearl's suspension is also interesting to me right now considering I am a huge Tennessee basketball fan.
  • Also, Terrell Pryor's selling of his merchandise is very interesting to me right now. I am interested to see if he will return for his senior year to Ohio St.
  • Chipper Jones is very significant as an athlete to me. He has been my favorite player since I can remember, and I have and still do wear his number.
  • Josh Hamilton and his life changes are also very significant to me. What a turn around and a positive impact for God.
  • Tim Tebow and his impact on people is also very significant to me. He is an amazing athlete as well as Christian man.

Event Management

On October 7th I completed my event management with our Sports Information Director, Steve Ruthsatz. It was a women's soccer match against Tennessee Wesleyan College from Athens, Tennessee. I never dreamed of how much work he does to prepare for each and every game.

We met at the soccer field at 12:15 to begin the pre-game process. Basically the pre-game is nothing but setting up audio and electrical equipment. We placed the game brochures in the media guide box before the game for the fans and spectators to pick up if they wanted to. He had several boxes of media equipment to set up including microphones, speakers, internet connection, and the scoreboard.

During the game Steve did the PA and I pretty much just watched and learned.

Post-game is nothing but cleaning up and tearing down what we put up before the game.

I learned a lot during this event management assignment. Like I mentioned before I never dreamed of how much is required for a soccer game to run smoothly.

    Site Visit #3 Turner Field

Our Sports Administration class took a tour of Turner Field on November 11, 2010. I had previously been on a tour but that had been about 8 years ago. Our tour was pretty in depth, however not as in depth as I would have liked. We got to visit the Sun Trust level, the luxury suites, Sky Field, and even got to stand outside of the Braves' locker room and look in. The only things that would have made this tour better would have been if we were able to actually go in the locker room, view the workout area, and view the batting cages underneath the stadium. My favorite part had to be the locker room even if we did not get to go inside it. Just seeing where the guys that I love to watch play the game of baseball get ready for the games I watch on TV was pretty cool. I would have loved to be able to sit in the same locker that Chipper or B-Mac sits in everyday.

Site Visit Summary #2: Georgia Tech/Georgia Dome

On November 2, 2010, our Sports Administration class took a trip to the Georgia Tech Student Rec. Center as well as the Georgia Dome. The bus departed around 9:30 a.m. and we were headed first to Georgia Tech. I must say that my jaw dropped when we pulled in the parking lot of the Rec. Center. This place is unbelievable! It was home to the 1996 Summer Olympics swimming/diving competitions. With that being said they had three pools, a diving pool, and even a lazy river with a slide. The place also has an incredible amount of workout equipment including a rock wall. Above the pool/diving area are the basketball courts and the indoor soccer/hockey field. The tour guide told us about a kid who kicked a basketball and it hit a sprinkler eventually causing a flooding and it totaled to about $1,000,000 in damages. He also told us that they do not offer graduate assistantships, but they do offer internships. He told us that he is the contact we need if we are interested in obtaining an internship at the Rec. Center.

After we left Georgia Tech we went to lunch at the CNN Center. The Georgia Dome is right next door to the CNN Center. Wally was our tour guide at the Dome. We got to see more than I could ever have possibly imagined. He showed us the "ins and the outs" of the stadium. We got to see everything from the SuperSuites to the Falcons locker room. The field itself was not painted because they had a Georgia State football game and a motivational speaker seminar over the weekend. It was pretty cool seeing them clean the turf and wipe off the college hash marks to prepare for Sunday afternoon's home Falcons game. The only thing that I was disappointed with was the fact that the field/stadium was not prepared for a Falcon's game. The endzones and half line were not painted, the goal posts were not up, and the locker room had no name plates or chairs out. Other than that, this trip was awesome. It was a once in a lifetime experience and I would just like to thank Dr. Epling for allowing us to go.

    Speaker Summary #4 Bob Pearson

On October 28, 2010, Dr. Bob Pearson of Berry College came to speak to our Sports Administration class. Dr. Pearson has a great personality and is a fabulous speaker. He told us that he came bearing gifts and passed out three items to each and every one of us. The first item was a whistle. The whistle stands for safety. It can be used in times of need to get people's attention. He also pointed out a scenario of a referee blowing his whistle during a basketball game. If he barely breathes in to the whistle, it will let out a weak sound; however, if he is assertive with blow then it will get everyone's attention and prove that he knows he made the right call. The next thing was a clip. It had multiple meanings. Last but not least he passed out a bright yellow notecard. He said he uses these cards on an everyday basis to help him remember things. Pearson stated that he has them all over his car, on his desk, and even at his house. Dr. Pearson is the Athletic Director at Berry College. He is in his 29th year at Berry. He is also the head of the Department of Kinesiology for the school. He has trained many high school coaches in his day, and many of them are now coaches and thank him for everything that they now know. In closing, he recommended that we see four movies: Miracle, Rudy, Mr. Holland's Opus, and The Rookie. Pearson said that he loves all of these movies and finds inspiration in all of them.

    ICE 11-15

    11) Comcast Spectacor/Northwest Georgia Trade & Convention Center
    - The first one is for the Northwest Georgia Trade & Convention Center in Dalton, Georgia. I believe this internship would be a great thing for me because I have always been interested in working with the media in some way, shape, form, or fashion. It could be a great building block for my career and provide much needed work experience. However, it is an unpaid internship. Basically, I would be performing any duties that the Marketing Department needed for me to do. These duties could include anything from writing press releases to representing the arena at festivals and fairs.
    12) Turner Sports Sponsorship and Marketing Intern
    - The second one is for Turner Sports Broadcasting in Atlanta, Georgia. This internship would be a great way to start a career that some day could end up in the television business. Atlanta is not too far from my hometown and I have always had dreams of working in television. I would not mind to live in Atlanta and i possess all of the skills required for this job including the preferred major. I would be assisting with the execution of on-air sponsorships and promotions for the Sports Sponsorship and Marketing department.
    13) Atlanta Braves Ticket Sales Trainee
    - The third one is for the Atlanta Braves organization in Atlanta, Georgia. Working in the Atlanta Braves organization would be a dream job. I could hopefully use this internship to help work my way up through the organization. I would have no problem working any and all Braves games including games on weekends and holidays. I would be helping with the promotion of ticket sales and packages, as well as actually making sure the tickets and packages get sold.
    14) Atlanta Braves Ticket Operations Trainee
    - The fourth one is for the Atlanta Braves organization in Atlanta, Georgia. Any job in the Atlanta Braves organization would be an incredible experience. This job would give me great experience with customer service both face to face and over the phone. I would be assisting in the processing, printing, and mailing of tickets to both companies and individuals.
    15) Atlanta Braves Special Events Trainee
    - The fifth one is for the Atlanta Braves organization in Atlanta, Georgia. If I was able to land a job in the Atlanta Braves organization, I would consider my life successful. This job in the Special Events department would just be an added plus. Special Event management is something that I could possibly be interested in pursuing. I am already up to date on professional sporting events, and this could possibly help me land this job in the near future. I would be assisting in updating weekly availability of rental space, distribution of the monthly calendar to the Braves Front Office personnel and producing Special Events MLB reports for the legal department.

Speaker Summary #3 Coach Bill Popp

On October 19, 2010, Bill Popp came to talk to our Sports Administration class. Popp is the Head Baseball Coach and Athletic Director at Reinhardt University. He has been at Reinhardt since 2004 when he built the baseball program from the ground up. He has been the Athletic Director for six years. He said that the job basically fell into his lap. Popp came in as the Assistant A.D. and the year after he came the Head A.D. left and he was offered the position.

Before Reinhardt, Popp attended West Georgia and was undecided about a major. He then went on to Kennesaw State University and graduated with a B.S. in Sport Management. He played baseball at KSU when they were a NCAA Division II powerhouse. After graduating from KSU he became the Assistant Baseball Coach at Oglethorpe College in 1994. The head coaching job at Oglethorpe also fell into his lap. The year after he became assistant the head coach resigned. He was then offered the head job. He was there for 13 years. Popp also coached at East Cobb for 14 years with his assistant at Reinhardt, Coach John Ihlenberg.

He came to talk to our class about the things that an Athletic Director does.
As an Athletic Director he has several administrative tasks that he has to do on a regular basis. Some of the things that he does include:

    - He works with the budgets of both scholarships and athletic operations
    - He deals with eligibility issues of student-athletes
    - He on committees for both the NAIA and the AAC (Appalachian Athletic Conference)
    - His hours are basically 9:30-5:30 or 6:00 during the summer
    - When school is in session he pretty much sets his own hours as long as he gets his things finished.

Coach Popp also gave us some statistics about Reinhardt University and the NAIA.

    - There are more than 240 student-athletes at RU. This totals to about 1/3 of the population on campus.
    - Reinhardt started off in the GCAC (Georgia Collegiate Athletic Conference). This conference was every school in the state of Georgia besides Division I schools. Reinhardt then spent six years in the SSAC (Southern States Athletic Conference).
    - This past year RU moved into the AAC. Scholarships played a major role in the move. The schools in the AAC offer around the same amount of athletic scholarships as RU. However, due to the move RU's teams have longer travel times to face conference opponents. There are currently eight schools in the conference and they are pursuing the idea of adding more in the near future.

Coach Popp also mentioned the fact that Reinhardt is talking about adding a football program in the future.

    - He said that in six months he should know more details about whether or not it is a real possibility.
    - The reasons they are pursuing a football program include the fact that it will pay for itself in the long run and the recent success of football programs at schools the same size as RU.

Bill Popp's visit was very informative and we really appreciate him taking time out of his busy schedule to spend a few minutes with our class.
